Tiny Library

Library,Public Building

May 2021

Bamnoli, Maharashtra, India

The selected site sits in the rural area of western ghats in Maharashtra along the backwater of the Koyna Dam, about 40km from Satara city. Bamnoli, is a quaint little village with few houses. It has a transit point for people to reach the rural area on the other side of the backwater where they change from road to waterway to reach Vasota and Tapola and then proceed by road again to reach their final destination. The frequency of the ferry and the bus being 90 minutes, people pass their time along the water edge or by having a tea or a snack in the village. Such insertions of a ‘Tiny Library’ at these three transit points along the water edge will not only benefit the local villagers but also the commuters passing by. It will help uplift the entire rural region along the Koyna backwater.
The proposed building of the library is conceived as an open pavilion. It is load bearing structure with composite earth stabilized block masonry and a parasol in steel to deal with the heavy rainfall in the area. The shape of the roof helps in conserving rainwater as well as solar energy. The ventilation on the east west façade encourages natural wind movement. The pavilion has a flexible interior layout to accommodate community events in indoor and outdoor area.
The design proposal uses a sustainable approach for building activity as well as management of the same by the local community
