Idea of a ‘new’ public building in ‘Luytens Delhi’
The ‘Luytens Delhi’ area is of national importance in terms of the number of administrative buildings it houses and its colonial architecture. The idea of New Delhi explored the ‘Garden City’ concept with large plot sizes, tree avenues and compound edges of public building. This has led to inactive and dead steet edges.
The idea of a ‘new’ public building in this area is to open out these street and building edges to the people with following strategies:
1. Breaking the existing typology of buildings having a rigid compounded edge in the area. Instead the building edge itself will act as a barrier.
2. Giving back space between the building and the compound wall to the city as well as making the building more permeable to the common people so that one can experience the ethos of the public architecture.
3. Creating public memory, spirit and associational value through Architecture.
